　即身仏とは衆生救済を願い、厳しい修行のすえ自らの肉体をミイラにして残したお坊さんのことです｡即身仏と似た言葉に即身成仏がありますが、この二つは意味がまったく違います。

　この即身仏になるための修行というのは、木食修行（もくじきしゅぎょう）と土中入定（どちゅうにゅうじょう）という二段階になっています｡木食修行は土中入定のための準備のようなもので、米や麦などの五穀、十穀を断って木の実などで命を繋ぎながら体の脂肪や水分などを落としていき、ほとんど即身仏そのものの状態にまで体を作っていくという大変な荒行なんだそうです｡
　木食修行を終えると土中入定ということをします。これは地面に深さ３メートルほどの穴を掘ってそこに石室（いしむろ）を築き、更にそこへ呼吸のために節を抜いた竹筒の先が地上に出るようになっている木棺を入れ、その中に生きたままで入って埋められます。行者はその中で断食をしながら鐘を鳴らしてお経を読み続けます。
　その鐘の音が地上の人に聞こえなくなると、息が絶えたということで一旦掘り出され、すぐにまた埋められます｡そうして1000日後（3年3ヶ月後とも）に再び掘り出されると、それだけであとは何もしなくてもちゃんとミイラになっているんだそうです｡このようにして即身仏になりました。考えれば考えるほど凄まじいものです。
Sokushinbutsu (即身仏?) refers to a practice of Buddhist monks observing austerity to the point of death and entering mummification while alive.[1] This process of self-mummification was mainly practiced in Yamagata in Northern Japan between the 11th and 19th century, by members of the Japanese Vajrayana school of Buddhism called Shingon (“True Word”). The practitioners of sokushinbutsu did not view this practice as an act of suicide, but rather as a form of further enlightenment.[2]

It is believed that many hundreds of monks tried, but only 24 such mummifications have been discovered to date. There is a common suggestion that Shingon school founder Kukai brought this practice from Tang China as part of secret tantric practices he learned, and that were later lost in China
